‘August!’ Dad wrenched the door open wider and the wind hurled a sheet of icy snow straight into the room. ‘AUGUST!’

‘He’s out there?’ A strangled sob escaped from Maria’s throat.

Within seconds, everyone had scattered outside. Dad pushed through the snow, desperately calling out August’s name, Jurgen and Tör tumbled into each other in their haste to check the rear of the cabin, whilst Hedda was doing her best to hold Maria upright.

‘AUGUST!’ April yelled, her lips stinging with the bitter cold. ‘BLAZE!’

She took a step off the porch, sinking up to her calf in a fresh drift. It was useless. The falling snow not only masked her cries, but it also hid any tracks August or the husky might have made. After a few steps, she turned back to the cabin, her hair tangled and her cheeks flushed pink.

‘He’s not round the back!’ Jurgen said. ‘We checked everywhere.’

‘And I tried calling Blaze . . .’ Tör stopped mid-sentence, his mouth set in an uncharacteristic frown.

April exchanged a worried look with Hedda. Blaze never failed to respond to verbal commands. He was a sled dog, after all.

‘He is a baby. He cannot have gone far,’ Hedda said, pulling on her felt hat. ‘I suggest we search the immediate area around the cabin.’

A deep echoey wind swept through the valley, setting off the huskies, who began to howl like wolves. April glanced at Maria, whose teeth were chattering uncontrollably. Dad curled an arm round her shoulders and pulled her close.

April could see he was torn between what to do. Should he stay with Maria or search for his son? It was an impossible choice.

‘You stay, Dad,’ April said, an idea slowly beginning to take shape inside her. ‘Maria needs you. I’ll go.’

‘You can’t go out alone in this!’

April lowered her voice. ‘What if I’m not alone?’

April’s thoughts turned to Bear. If there was anyone who could find a missing baby, then it would be him. She had trusted him with her life more than once. And now she would trust him with her brother’s life.

Realisation dawned on Dad’s face. So that’s who she’d been talking to earlier. But now wasn’t the time for explanations. He nodded wearily, tightening his arm round Maria.

‘We’ll find him,’ April said quietly. ‘And that’s a polar-bear promise.’

With no time to lose, Jurgen and Tör grabbed the skis to scout the immediate area, whilst Hedda fetched her lead dog, Ripley, to help with the search. April gave Dad and Maria one last hug and then pulled on her jacket and hat. Grabbing a pair of binoculars, she waded through the snow in the direction of where Bear had been.

At least, she thought it was the right direction.

But, as the wind was whipping the surface of the snow and hiding any previous tracks, it was hard to tell anything any more. She wasn’t even sure if she had gone the right way – all evidence of the cake trail had disappeared.

April tried to push the panic away.

Instead, she closed
